Measuring Peroxyacetyl Nitrate from the Mipas-e Instrument

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is produced from pollution events, is an important odd-nitrogen (NOy) compound in the atmosphere and acts as a reservoir of nitrogen oxides. Using measurements by the limb-viewing Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding on ENVISAT (MIPAS-E) we retrieve global measurements of PAN volume mixing ratios (vmrs) in the upper troposphere in August 2004 using the OPERA scheme. Our results are within previously observed values of PAN in mid-latitudes (0-700 pptv) and the total error on a single retrieval point (pressures between 150 mb and 300 mb) is generally better than 40%. We observe a distinct difference between Northern Hemisphere (NH) and Southern Hemisphere (SH) PAN vmrs, with 40-50N PAN vmrs almost five times greater at 8 km compared to the same latitude range and altitude in the SH. We have performed a preliminary retrieval of acetone for the same time period. The correlation between PAN and acetone in the NH is compact (r=0.68), whereas SH data are slightly anti-correlated (r=-0.1).
